Sustainability

Dr. Lena Edwards Academic Charter School is creating a new campus eco system and school-wide collaboration to join the burgeoning movement of sustainability across the nation.

Taken collectively, schools are major consumers of energy, paper, food, water, cleaning products, and other resources, and generate waste, pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions. Our partnership for development in Sustainable Education helps us to envision a healthy and abundant, equitable and safe, resilient and ecologically diverse world, connected through a global society while acting as a transformational hub of our community.

Sustainability at Dr. Lena Edwards Academic Charter School is defined as a learning process that furnishes students, teachers, and our school community with new knowledge to adopt ways to achieve ecologically responsible citizenship. Vital sustainable actions to accomplish include learning sustainable consumption, waste reduction and energy preservation, recycling and student learning.

We stress participatory teaching and learning methods that motivate and empower learners to change their behavior and take action for sustainable development. Education for Sustainable Development consequently promotes competencies like critical thinking, imagining future scenarios and making decisions in a collaborative way.
