Summer at St. Peters University

Dr. Lena Edwards Academic Charter School Launches First Summer Learning Program at Saint Peter’s University for Elementary School-Aged Students

Building upon its ongoing partnership with Saint Peter’s University through the 21st Century Community Learning Center program for middle school students, Dr. Lena Edwards Academic Charter School expanded its college-campus learning experiences this summer by launching its first Summer Learning Program for elementary school-aged students entering first through fifth grade.

Held July 6 through July 31, the five-day-a-week program provided a unique combination of academic instruction, targeted remediation, enrichment opportunities, and exposure to the inspiring environment of a university campus. A total of 108 students enrolled in the program, with an average daily attendance of 90 students.

Under the leadership of Mrs. Deborah Johnson, Summer Program Director, students participated in engaging lessons designed to strengthen foundational reading and mathematics skills while preparing for continued academic success. The instructional team included Mrs. Ait-El Qadi, Ms. Capalnean, Ms. Davis, Mrs. DeArmas, Mrs. Erdman, Mr. Hebron, Mrs. Mejia, Mrs. Nkrumah, Mrs. L. Salazar, Ms. Salazar, T. Salazar, Mrs. Seriosa, Ms. Wilkins, and Mrs. Johnson, who worked collaboratively to provide high-quality instruction and hands-on STEM learning experiences that fostered creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving.

The opportunity to learn on the campus of Saint Peter’s University provided students with an experience that extended well beyond the classroom. Surrounded by a collegiate atmosphere, students were introduced to the expectations and possibilities of higher education. Through daily exposure to the university environment, they developed positive study habits, strengthened their academic confidence, and began to see college as an achievable goal.

Throughout the program, students grew academically and personally by strengthening their reading and mathematics skills, gaining confidence, creating new friendships, and participating in hands-on enrichment activities and Friday field trips that sparked curiosity and made learning enjoyable.

Enrichment activities were coordinated by Family Liaison, Ms. Stephanie Anton and Coordinator of Student Life, Ms. Genesis Brito who created opportunities for students to learn through exploration, teamwork, and creative experiences beyond the traditional classroom. Friday field trips to Bounce U and Berry Lane Park complemented classroom instruction by encouraging physical activity, cooperation, and social development.

Students were also encouraged by visits from Principal Dr. James Brewer, who spent time with students and staff throughout the program, reinforcing the school's commitment to academic excellence and continuous learning.

Mrs. Johnson also documented the Summer Learning Program by creating a highlight video showcasing classroom instruction, STEM activities, enrichment experiences, field trips, and memorable moments from throughout the four-week program.

Dr. Lena Edwards Academic Charter School's first Summer Learning Program for elementary school-aged students reflects the school's commitment to providing meaningful educational opportunities that promote academic achievement, inspire curiosity, and nurture future college and career aspirations. By expanding its partnership with Saint Peter’s University to include younger learners, the school continues to invest in innovative programs that prepare students for lifelong success.
