Read Across America at DLEACS

While a number of factors influence how well a child does in an academic setting, one critical aspect of child development is the formation of reading skills. Children need exposure to books at an early age because research continuously demonstrates that when children listen to stories, they gain essential language skills.

Read Across America at DLEACS advances the development of a diversified educational setting for children, and offers a variety of activities for children's literacy. This year twelve community volunteers visited us to participate in our annual event. Hundreds of students in grades kindergarten through five listened intently to their respective classroom ambassadors read books to them including, "Green Eggs and Ham" and the courageous story of Ruby Bridges. Middle school students gave audience to Veteran Tony Goodson who shared his military career perspective. With earnest and eager attention, students asked questions about the culture of the armed forces. Many children requested an audience with Mr. Goodson in the community so they may continue the connection; to which he happily obliged.

In honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday, the nation kicks off an annual month-long children's literacy celebration. DLEACS joins in the effort to campaign for children's literacy with this event and through our innovative strategies in the curriculum.

We thank Mrs. Slack who organized Read Across America at DLEACS, Ms. G., our food coordinator along with our teachers and faculty who helped to make the day a meaningful and resonating occasion. Click here to see photos of the event.
