Inspired by the late Michael E. Maher, sons M. Brian Maher and Basil Maher led the charge to renovate a dilapidated memorial center near school grounds in Jersey City. Today the Michael E. Maher serves as the physical activity home to Dr. Lena Edwards Academic Charter School students.

Dr. Lena Edwards Academic Charter School endeavors to develop, implement, and evaluate comprehensive school physical activity programs. Our curriculum for elementary and middle school children encourages students to be active, to learn how to play a variety of sports, and to learn about teamwork and personal responsibility.

Our comprehensive approach includes coordination of our physical education department, classroom teachers, school administrators, recess supervisors, before- and after-school program leaders, parents, and community members.
